How to Create a Boho Gallery Wall

Gallery walls are my favorite. I LOVE collecting quirky, unique art from thrift stores and Etsy shops. I have art my kids have made, art my friends have painted, and art from my Nana’s hands. It makes me giddy to find an original painting at Goodwill…because someone took hours and hours to create magic on that canvas, and I get the opportunity to help it live on for longer! I have also found funky pieces at Home Goods, TJ Maxx, Target…whenever I see something and my heart skips a beat, I know it should be on the wall! Every item on our walls has a story…and memories attached. Putting up art makes me feel truly HOME.

Isn’t it a crazy change?! The coziness level increases ten fold! We finished this room just a few days ago…and now we can’t stop hanging out in there! The wall makes it even more fun. And because I know someone will ask…I got the rug from RugsUSA (Multi Chevron), and all of the furniture was bought on marketplace. We love buying things second-hand! This couch was such a fun story…Matt found it on marketplace and it turns out the owner was a blog reader here years ago! We got to meet when we picked it up…it’s just such a small world! Hey Mara! Check out your couch! It’s definitely well-loved here!

Gallery Wall Tips:

  • Just begin. Stop thinking about it and do it! Pick up your biggest piece and start there.

  • Get the right tools. We only use screws…never nail & hammer (although you could). Many times, we will just screw right through the frame to secure it. That was a trick we started using when we hung art in our RVs. Use double stick tape to secure unruly pieces that want to sway every time someone walks in the room.

  • Give yourself enough time so that you’re not rushing. It took us about 90 minutes to do the upstairs and 45 min to do the basement. But we are experienced professionals LOL…so plan for longer if you’re new to this! There is, however, a benefit to setting a timer/goal so that you don’t get hung up on every little detail.

  • Lay everything out on the floor. Have someone hold it up and look at it from far away (you’ll notice a lot of this in the video!). Don’t forget to mix and match horizontal with vertical. I know some people say to cut out the shapes of each frame from newsprint and hang them on the wall first. In all my years of making these, I’ve never done that. But if you tend to lean to the crazy perfectionist side, you might consider doing that.

  • Have a helper. But not 2 helpers. More people = more opinions. And more opinions will only slow you down!

  • Be methodical and keep moving forward. Matt and have I this down to a science. I place it and hold my finger on the wall where he needs to place the screw, and bam. Done. Repeat that 32 more times and we’re done.

  • Keep it tight. I like a pretty tight seams in between each piece. I’ve seen some that hardly have any space at all and it looks cool too! This is one of the biggest mistakes people make…not putting the art close enough and not using ENOUGH pieces of art.

  • Go high if you can! Our wall is a bit low in this room, but you can see in my Texas house that I was able to create more of a “shape” with the wall. I love tapering it off to the sides with smaller pieces and also having a peak.

  • Create layers and use unexpected pieces. I love to add shelves for more art or something fun like a jar of glitter! Here is a closer photo of the shelves I used in TX). Anything you can use that creates a 3-D effect (sticking out away from the wall) adds interest.

  • Repeat your color combos. It might look like I just threw anything I could find on the wall! But there is actually quite a bit of thought that goes into what I’m including and what gets left out. I lean toward green, blue, coral, and mustard…and that unifies all of the pieces. You want it to look “cohesively chaotic” to get that boho vibe. :)

  • Stay within the same “tones” with your art. You’ll notice that the living room has more muted tones and the basement is a bit more whimsical and light/bright.

  • Have fun and don’t get too serious about it all. You can always go back and change something out if you don’t like it!

And because we completed the living room, we thought we better do the basement as well! This is where we “live” right now while we are remodeling. The purple coverlet in the bottom left corner below is our bed, and then there are 2 additional bedrooms for Lucy and Emma (Bella has her room upstairs). I have wanted to put up our gallery wall down here for SO long…but it just kept getting pushed back because other projects were more important.

But look at it! Now I can’t believe we waited for so long…I get excited just to walk down the stairs now! These are IKEA Farlov couches with Soferia velvet slipcovers. The rug is the Berber Moroccan Diamond rug from RugsUSA.

Just remember friends…it’s not about perfection. Keep it quirky…it’s the best way!

Lots of Little Lovelies

We spent the weekend at home...doing some of my favorite things: cleaning, organizing, and adding bits of color and whimsy! Curtains were hung. Storage was added. I snagged a nearly new sheepskin rug on Craigslist. Totally obsessed with it. Unfortunately, so are the dogs. I have to put it up every night. A small sacrifice to enjoy the amazing squishiness.

We trimmed out several windows with our salvaged barnwood. I love the mixture of bright white + bright colors...and a bit of rustic. Oh, and free is good.

image.jpg

We don't know exactly when we'll be putting in our tile backsplash, so instead of waiting, we hung all of our shelving/pots so that the kitchen is more functional in the meantime.

image.jpg

The other set of open shelving was hung...which means now my jarred dry goods are on display. Food art!

image.jpg

More curtains...these were originally a huge soft tablecloth that I found for $2.00. I knew immediately that I would cut it in half and clip it up for curtains! No hemming or anything fancy. Just cut and clip! While I was taking this photo...a hummingbird who was wearing the exact colors of my curtains flew up to the window for a bit and stared at me. And then flew away. It took my breath away...pure magic.

Oh what's that? You thought my wall was orange? Well it's not. LOL! For those of you counting, this is the fourth color that has been on this wall. Yellow, Green, Orange...and now WHITE! After the floors were finished, the color was just..."off". Matt and I were both on the same page this time...knowing that we had to change it. I ADORE the white. This week you will find me dreaming up a gallery wall for that space. Art, trinkets, and more! Eeeeeep! Oh, and I'll be on the hunt for the perfect light fixture. I think I may already have it in my shed...just needs a bit of paint.

image.jpg

Speaking of paint...there will be lots of spraying. Our dining table chairs are getting a facelift.

...and then this. Oh my. I don't remember the last time I FINISHED an entire book. Front to back.  It's that good. For those of you who email and ask if I'm ever going to write a book about decorating...my answer can now be "NOPE! Just read The Nesting Place"! It's inspiring, accessible, quirky, funny...I want to buy a copy for everyone! You know that feeling when you get to the end of a book and you're sad because you want it to go on forever? Well, I feel like now it can....because she has a blog too! I'm pretty sure I'm way late to the party on discovering Myquillyn. But if she lived in Boulder, we would be BFF's.

So there it is! Weekend goodness. We did take time to swing in the hammock (under newly hung happy flags!), meet neighbors, walk in the sunshine, and check out a new gathering in Boulder. Oh, and I almost forgot about the bear who came to visit!

And now it's Monday morning...oatmeal has been eaten. Coffee savored. Doors and windows are open with a cool breeze blowing through. Sunshine galore. It's completely quiet outside except for the birdies singing their hearts out.

It's going to be a great week! Oooop, well, my kids are trying to poke each others eyes out. Gotta run! Still off to a great start! :)

Creating a Nest : 5 Sources of Inspiration

The word "nest" makes me feel all happy inside. Beyond the beautiful imagery of a bird carefully and instinctually creating a home for her littles...I found a lovely definition that describes a nest as "...a place that is warm, safe, and comfortable".  I want my home to be all of those things!  But I have to continually remind myself that it doesn't happen overnight. It takes time, effort, and dedication. It is applied in layers...over the years. Building a nest for your family is an ACTIVE PROCESS. One that requires you to be IN your home...spending time there. Showing it love daily.

I often get emails from friends who tell me they wish they had the creative "eye" for decorating. And while I don't think it's something that comes naturally to all, it can be developed like any skill  and it takes practice! And if you desire to create a nest that is welcoming and beautiful, YOU CAN! If you have $5 or $50,000...you can!

I want to share some of my favorite sources of inspiration for design and decor...because that's where it begins. If you aren't filled with inspiration to create, nothing much is going to happen. When your heart and mind are inspired, it spills out into everything you do...and that includes your home.

LET'S GO TO THE LIBRARY

The library is like hitting the inspiration jackpot. I always leave with a  HUGE pile of books. And they are FREE! Mind boggling! :-) Home design books are often large, and only come in hardback. They aren't something that I like to purchase on a regular basis unless I know I will refer to it again and again. So checking them out makes way more sense.

We have a new library branch in our neighborhood (yay!) and during the grand opening, I picked up a stack of new design books.  I thought I had seen every book out there...but these blew my mind! So delightful. Full of color and whimsy. I especially loved this one called "Happy Home: Everyday Magic for a Colorful Life". Any book that has the words happy, magic, and colorful...ummmmm yes!

How great is this photo?!  Lots of inspiration there for our own white kitchen. I love to pour over every detail and every color combo. Swoon.

YOU SHOULD PIN THAT

pinterest.jpg

Of course, there is Pinterest. I resisted for a long time...thinking, "why in the world would I need to do something like that?". I laugh at that now, because it brings so much joy! Yes, it's easy to be sucked in (as with any social media)...but it's an incredible way to organize ideas for a project. Pinterest has taken the place of binders bursting with torn out magazine pages and mood boards glued together with Elmer's. I have public boards to share the goodies I've found, and lots of private boards for stuff I obsess about but don't want to blow up my feed with. Like walk-in mountain chicken coops and hairstyle ideas. Pinterest is also the first place I search for tutorials on things like "how to refinish furniture with milk paint" and "gardening in the mountains". I'm constantly pulling up a Pinterest board on my phone when talking to friends (and random strangers) about this or that. What? Doesn't everyone do that?! ;-)

I've heard people complain that they pin stuff but never do any of it...and I think that's OK! You are still looking at beautiful things. Filling your mind with ideas and good quotes and colorful genius. So pin away! Even if it's just to make your heart happy.

Here are some of my personal home inspiration boards:

MAGAZINE LOVE

And then...my personal favorite: MAGAZINES! Pinterest is awesome, but there is just something about holding pretty pictures on glossy pages IN MY HANDS. I have a bit of a magazine obsession. I've overcome it somewhat, but oh...it's so hard to resist! There are definitely some magazines that just WOW me every time I open them. Here are my TOP THREE favorite home decorating magazines:

1. Domino (back in print! yesssssss! ...before it came back into print, I actually bought an entire year of back issues on eBay. it's that good.)
2. Country Living (chippy paint heaven!)
3. Better Homes & Gardens (not just for your Grandma!)

RUGS & TEXTILES = HAPPY

This is me with all my rug samples piled on my lap...driving them back to the store. I couldn't stop petting them...."my preciousssssss". Oh they were pretty. The one on the bottom right has been my dream rug for so long...but it's a flat weave and Matt doesn't love flat weave. Hmmmmm....can anyone help me make a case that it won't slip and slide all over?! Even with a pad? He's not convinced :)

I love local stores! There is nothing like seeing colors and textures in person...so different than just looking online. This particular trip was to the Unfinished Furniture Store in Boulder...where they carry my favorite rug company...Dash & Albert. Area rugs and textiles are a huge source of inspiration for me. When designing a room, that's my starting point. A fantastic pattern. A color combo that makes me giddy. I begin there and work everything around it.

These pieces don't have to be expensive...but in my experience, spending a little more on these pieces is worth it. I purchased one of my favorite rugs of all time 5 years ago. It's been used in 3 RVs and 4 houses and it's still going strong! It's wool. I adore wool. Once you have wool rugs, it's hard to go back...they clean easily and wear like a dream!

I'm on high alert for the perfect rug for our great room right now. I'm pretty sure I have seen every rug that has ever been manufactured and I still haven't made up my mind. But it sure is fun looking!

Some of my favorite rug sources:

Dash & Albert
Joss & Main
Crate & Barrel
CB2
World Market
Pottery Barn Teen
Company C

Curtains are another favorite source of inspiration. I love the patterns and color!  The right curtains can radically change the feel of a room.

Some of my favorite curtain sources:

Urban Outfitters
IKEA
World Market
Thrift Stores (vintage twin sheets!)

THRIFT IT UP

Saving the best for last...my true love...THRIFTING! There is nothing better than finding exactly what you are looking for at a fraction of the cost. It takes time and foresight and dedication...but the rewards are huge. The majority of my house decor and nearly all of my clothes are found second-hand. The trunk-full of vintage goodness above was found last week at an estate sale in Boulder. It was like taking a time machine back to the 70's...but everything in the house had a price tag. Not pictured...vintage Muppet, Little People, and pristine Strawberry Shortcake dolls. We were in heaven!

It's garage sale season now too...and that is my ultimate favorite because those prices are usually half of the thrift store! Gleeeeeeee!

Other Online Inspiration:

Apartment Therapy (so much to see! love it. we've been featured several times for their tours…here is one of them)

I like to go back and see colors and arrangements I've used in the past. You can see all of the homes we have lived in and loved here.

So there you have it...
